September 11th, a date that brings back sobering memories and emotions about the worst terrorist attack in United States history.  On this day 12 years ago, 2,977 were killed.

Today we remember that day amongst talks about military action against Syria looming in the background.

In New York, it has become a tradition for loved ones to read the names of their loved ones who were victims and remember them in moments of silence at the 2-year-old memorial plaza at the site of the former World Trade Center.

“No matter how many years pass, this time comes around each year and it’s always the same,” said Karen Hinson of Seaford, N.Y.. Hinson lost her 34-year-old brother, Michael Wittenstein, a Cantor Fitzgerald employee.

“My brother was never found, so this is where he is for us,” she said to CBS New York as she arrived for the ceremony.

Also among those killed were 403 police and firefighters, and 184 passengers on American Airlines Flight 77.

Also, a ceremony took place at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville. It included the traditional bell-ringing and wreath-laying.

The Pentagon also had a morning ceremony for victims’ relatives and survivors of the attack there. Those in attendance heard remarks from Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and other officials.  An afternoon observance for Pentagon workers is also planned.

September 11th will always be one of those days in history that everybody will remember exactly how they felt as they watched the tragedy unfold. A day that seems like yesterday and at the same time, so long ago.
