Breaking News: It’s Official!! Mayor @MichaelBloomberg Endorses President @BarackObama for 4 More Years

| November 1, 2012 | 0 Comments

Mayor Bloomberg pledged his allegiance to President Obama today and we can all thank Hurricane Sandy for it.

Bloomberg said the lethal superstorm made clear that global warming must be addressed, and that Obama was the best candidate to tackle the problem.

The devastation inflicted by Hurricane Sandy “brought the stakes of next Tuesday’s presidential election into sharp relief,” Bloomberg wrote in an op-ed for Bloomberg View, part of the news and information empire he owns.

“Our climate is changing. And while the increase in extreme weather we have experienced in New York City and around the world may or may not be the result of it, the risk that it might be — given this week’s devastation — should compel all elected leaders to take immediate action,” said Bloomberg in his op-ed.
Bloomberg once considered himself a Republican, but switched to Democrat and later to Independent where he stands now. His stance as an Independent could help sway more Independents President Obama’s way as we get closer to Election day next Tuesday.

He praised President Obama’s support for abortion rights and for same-sex couples. The endorsement wasn’t an all-out love fest either. He did have some criticisms of the President and his 4 years in office.

“Like so many other independents, I have found the past four years to be, in a word, disappointing,” Bloomberg said. “In 2008, Obama ran as a pragmatic problem-solver and consensus-builder,” the mayor continued. “But as president, he devoted little time and effort to developing and sustaining a coalition of centrists.”

He went on to say, “Rather than uniting the country around a message of shared sacrifice, (Obama) engaged in partisan attacks and has embraced a divisive populist agenda focused more on redistributing income than creating it. If [Obama] listens to people on both sides of the aisle, and builds the trust of moderates, he can fulfill the hope he inspired four years ago.”

President Obama’s campaign issued a statement from the President praising and thanking Bloomberg.

“I deeply respect him for his leadership in business, philanthropy and government,” the President said, “and appreciate the extraordinary job he’s doing right now, leading New York City through these difficult days.”

“While we may not agree on every issue, Mayor Bloomberg and I agree on the most important issues of our time,” Obama said. The President specifically cited climate change, calling it “a threat to our children’s future, and we owe it to them to do something about it.”
