Tribute to Chaka Khan

On September 25th our legendary musical talents—Quincy Jones, Angie Stone, Stevie Wonder and many more—came together to celebrate the 32nd Anniversary of An Evening of the Stars at the Pasadena Civil Auditorium. All sharing a common interest of celebrating the achievements and community efforts of our 2011 UNCF (United Negro College Fund) Nominee.

BET’s The Monique Show host Monique stated, “We are here to celebrate two things; to celebrate you and for our students to stay in college and get proper education.” Saturday night, UNCF celebrated a Grammy award winning music legend Chaka Khan.

The United Negro College Fund has made college a possibility for our young children today by providing an outlet and support system to help get them through college. With the campaign launch for Emergency Student Aid, UNCF is able to raise funds to also assist college students’ in need (with scholarships opportunities) because “a mind is a terrible thing to waste,” states UNCF President.

In addition, Chaka Stated, “ UNCF prompted her to feel like she could do anything. You do not have to have a lot to give a lot. It doesn’t require much, just Love.”

Fantasia kicked the show off with “Tell Me Something Good” which had the crowd up and out of their seats! Other performers of the night included: Angie Stone, Melonie Fiona, Stevie Wonder, Ginuwine, Ledisi, El DeBarge, Faith Evans, and none other than the diva herself Chaka Khan.

Chaka Khan topped the night off right with her heart-felt tunes “Through the Fire,” “I’m Every Woman” and “Angel.” A string line of emotions touched the hearts of many who have and will forever more be touched by Chaka Khan’s legacy. “Through the fire, to the limit, to the wall” is all you could hear as the crowd mouthed and sang-along to their all-time favorite tune!

The mind is, indeed, a terrible thing to waste; lets help the youth of today become the leaders of tomorrow.

Be sure to tune-in and watch UNCF Chaka Khan Tribute on January 2011 and donate to help make a change in the lives of our children striving for a better future. If our children mean anything to us, then their education should mean everything to us! Donate today and help a child reach their dream through the UNCF Campaign for Emergency Student Aid.
