1. President Obama Elected for 2nd Term
We can admit that on the night of November 6, 2012 we too were glued to the TV, biting fingernails, sweating bullets, etc. waiting to see who the next President of the United States would be. Luckily for us, the rest of Former Republican Candidate Mitt Romney’s 47% and his “binders full of women”, President Obama was re-elected to serve his second term. Obama!
2. Jay Z and Beyonce Welcome Baby Blue Ivy to the World
On January 8, 2012 the superstar couple welcomed their first child, Blue Ivy to the world after speculations that Beyonce used a surrogate mother and other crazy conspiracy theories. Since then, we haven’t seen much of Baby Blue Ivy except for random pics that the two decide to drop of her whenever they feel like it, but she was still one of the most anticipated/already-famous babies of 2012.
3. Death of 17-Year Old Trayvon Martin
In the Orlando suburb of Sanford, Fl, 17-year old Trayvon Martin was fatally shot by neighbor George Zimmerman while visiting his father. Martin was walking back from the store wearing a hoodie and carrying Skittles when Zimmerman made calls to police claiming that a suspicious person was in his neighborhood. Against law enforcement orders, Zimmerman got out of his vehicle and approached Martin resulting in the two getting into a physical altercation. Zimmerman ended up shooting and killing Martin, and is currently using Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law as his defense, claiming that the shooting was in self defense although Martin was unarmed.
4. Frank Ocean Dominates Music After Coming out the Closet
Throughout the years, rumors constantly circulate about various male R&B artists and their sexual orientation, but in 2012, R&B newcomer Frank Ocean laid to rest any speculations about his love life. In an open letter to his fans, the Odd Future member admitted that he was once in love with a man before the release of his 2012 album, Channel Orange.
Of course after coming out, you couldn’t listen to Channel Orange around a male without him becoming uncomfortable with the idea that Frank may be referring to a male in the songs, but nonetheless, it looks like his career hasn’t suffered at all. The new school crooner racked up a whopping 6 nominations at the 2013 Grammy’s and Channel Orange turned out to be one of the best/highly-acclaimed albums of the year. Do you, Frank!
5. Whitney Houston Dies at Age 48
In February of 2012 one of the world’s most beloved singers, Whitney Houston, passed at the age of 48. Sources reported that the singer was found dead in her hotel bathtub just hours before she was set to attend Clive Davis’ annual Pre-Grammy bash. Her daughter Bobbi Kristina and the rest of her family have been dealing with their loss in front of our eyes on their Lifetime reality show, Houstons: On Our Own.
6. Slim Dunkin Killed After Fight in Atlanta Studio
One of the most promising members of Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka’s Brick Squad Monopoly, Slim Dunkin’s life was cut short at the tail-end of 2011 after he was shot and killed in front of an Atlanta studio. Vinson Hardimon aka Young Vito shot Mario Hamilton Slim Dunkin after the two fought over a piece candy or words that were rapped on a song while one of them were in the recording booth recording. Young Vito was officially charged with Felony murder, Aggravated Assault, and Criminal Possession of A Firearm and is currently awaiting trial. HHE has been in the courtroom covering all the latest developments as they have unfolded in this tragic story and the trial is scheduled to begin in midFebruary of 2013.
7. 26 Dead in Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting in Connecticut
On December 14, teachers and students alike attended school like any other day until the son of one of the school’s teachers opened fire on an innocent classroom and school faculty, killing 26 people with 20 of them being children. Police are reporting that the victims were shot up close, multiple times, and that the the shooter Adam Lanza, killed his mother Nancy Lanza at her New Town home before going to the school.
8. Katt Williams Retires from Comedy (Or So He Says)
Comedian Katt Williams dominated the headlines in 2012. Everytime you opened your laptop, you couldn’t help but see Katt and his crazy antics. In 2012 alone, the comedian slapped a Target employee, fled the scene in an electric cart, got arrested outside of an L.A. Subway while with Suge Knight and announced that he’d be retiring from comedy. How can he be retiring from comedy when his whole life is a comedy special?? Can’t wait to see what he craziness he gets himself into in 2013.
9. Philly vs. Philly: Meek Mill and Cassidy Go At It
In 2012 one of the biggest rap beefs of the year was between the two Philadelphia natives, Meek Mill and Cassidy. It all started when Cassidy dropped a horrible track titled “Condom Style” and Meek Mill was quoted saying that it’s the “worst rap song ever”. Cassidy responded to Meek’s statement with a diss track title “Me, Myself and iPhone” which then caused Meek to respond with his Cassidy diss track, “Repo”. Meek even took it a step further and photoshopped pics of Cassidy in a casket, with him sitting on top of it counting money along with Rick Ross.
It looks like Meek Mill has decided to start off 2013, beef-free though as he recently tweeted that he was done with the beef and that Cassidy needs to pay him for all the marketing and recent promo he’s received due to the beef.
10. Jay Z Officially Moves Nets to Brooklyn, Opens Barclay’s Center
As if the Knowles-Carter clan didn’t run enough of the world, rapper Jay-Z became part owner of the NY Nets and officially changed the name of the team to the Brooklyn Nets. The team now plays at Brooklyn’s Barclay’s Center which opened in September 2012 and was christened with a series of concerts from Jay Z which of course were all sold out in less than 24 hours.
11. Free Boosie! Rapper Lil Boosie Beats Murder Charge, Release Date Moved to Early 2013
In 2012 rumors circulated that Baton Rouge, LA rapper Lil Boosie whose real name is Torrence Hatch was facing multiple life sentences after being charged with first degree murder and smuggling drugs into prison. In December, it was announced that the rapper only had 60 more days to serve until he would be released. Lil Boosie is now set to be released in mid-February of 2013. Wipe him down!12.
12. Raymond vs. Raymond Custody Case
After months of going back and forth in court, Usher Raymond and his ex-wife, Tameka Raymond finally received a ruling from an Atlanta judge awarding Usher primary custody of the former couple’s two sons in August. But just when we thought we had heard the last of that saga, it popped up again! Earlier in December, Tameka and her lawyer Lisa West were able to have the case reviewed, but this time with a different judge as rumors circulated that the original judge presiding over the case may have been influenced by Usher’s camp or just woo’ed by his celebrity status.
The worst part of the situation is that during the heated battle, Tameka’s son from another marriage, Kile Glover passed away after a tragic accident where he was hit by a jet ski at Atlanta’s Lake Lanier. The case is still under review as of now.
