Not even a month into retirement and Jason Kidd has a new job back in the NBA.

Kidd who retired after a stellar 19-year career and closed out his final season with The New York Knicks was named the new head coach of The Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday night.

Kidd reportedly signed a three-year deal and will be officially introduced at a 2 p.m. ET news conference Thursday at Barclays Center.

The first time coach replaced P.J. Carlesimo and stated of his new position,

“This is a tremendous opportunity to be named head coach of the Brooklyn Nets, and it’s a role I have been studying for over the course of my playing days. Championship teams are built on being prepared, playing unselfishly and being held accountable, and that’s how I expect to coach this basketball team. I am truly excited about this next phase of my basketball career.”

This marks a return home for Kidd who spent many of his career highlight playing years with the organization when they were based in New Jersey.

Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov stated,

“Jason Kidd has a long and legendary history with the Nets and with the city of New York. He has the fire in the belly we need, and has achieved as a player everything the Brooklyn Nets are striving to achieve. We believe he will lead us there. Welcome home, Jason.”

Kidd led the New Jersey Nets to consecutive NBA Finals in 2002-03 and played 6½ seasons with the team.

Jason is second on the NBA’s career list in assists and steals, won an NBA title with Dallas and has two Olympic gold medals.

Nets general manager Billy King added,

“Jason is a proven winner and leader with an incredible wealth of basketball knowledge and experience. This will be a natural transition for him to move into the role of head coach, as he embodies the tough, smart and team-first mentality that we are trying to establish in Brooklyn.”
