Jay-Z’s engineer Young Guru sat down with CNN Radio Music Notes and discussed his storied career that started in Wilmington, Delaware and took him to Howard University and paying his dues sitting under some of Diddy’s production team The Hitmen and watching Bad Boy Records evolve from inception to the powerhouse that he is today.

He also discusses meeting Jigga through Memphis Bleek and how he became part of Jay’s trusted circle as he’s engineered 10 of Hova’s 11 albums.

Guru also let it be known that’s he’s not into Jay-Z personal business so he’s the wrong one to talk to about that. Young Guru stated,

“People sometimes get that misconstrued too. They think that I’m in Jay-Z’s personal life. I have nothing to do with his personal life. You can ask me anything about his music, but I’m not with him in the morning when he wakes up. We don’t eat breakfast together. We make music together.”

Guru also discussed Jay-Z and Kanye West’s recording techniques and how the Roc Nation CEO memorizes his rhymes before entering the booth.

Listen as Guru drops a whole bunch of knowledge below.
