In a sad turn of events, Martina Davis-Correia, the sister of late Georgia inmate Troy Davis has passed at the age of 44, after a decade-long battle with breast cancer.  Davis-Correia fought tirelessly for almost 20 years to try and prove the innocence of her brother Troy Davis, who was executed on September 21 for the killing of a Savannah police officer in 1989, and was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000. Davis-Correia like many other human rights activists felt that there was too much doubt for Troy Davis to face the death penalty.

Amnesty International, the organization that helped the Davis family in fighting for Troy’s life, issued this statement about Davis-Correia: “She fought to save her brother’s life with courage, strength and determination, every step of the way. She was a powerful example of how one person can make a difference as she led the fight for justice for Troy Davis, even as she endured her own decade-long battle with cancer. And despite the terrible blow of his execution, she remained brave and defiant to the core of her being, stating her conviction that one day his death would be the catalyst for ending the death penalty.”
