Movie Review: #Creed Starring Michael B. Jordan, Phylicia Rashad, Tessa Thompson and Sylvester Stallone
Creed was a masterpiece. Let Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station) direct whatever he wants. I left the movie theater so inspired. Michael B. Jordan, Slyvester Stallone, Tessa Thompson and Phylicia Rashad were brilliant. They all should be in the award season conversation. The cinematography (From a DP who just happens to be a woman by the name of Maryse Alberti) was amazing. The score and soundtrack were appropriately epic (Ludwig Goransson), never thought a Meek Mill song backed by a 50 piece orchestra could make me cry.
I saw it several times over the Thanksgiving Holiday and had to give it a proper review. The film was so intimate but still managed to be action packed. The fight sequences were insane so much so the different audiences I viewed the film with all yelled, screamed and applauded at the screen. That one-take fight…my goodness. The scene with the dirt bikes…my goodness. The walk out music…my goodness. The training montages…my goodness. The fact that a love interest in a studio film had braids and wasn’t ghetto or stereotypical…my goodness. The fact that the love interest in a studio film was fully realized and had motivations beyond just supporting her man…my goodness. The fact that the main character actually supported his woman’s career…my goodness. The fact they showed a black man helping his woman take down her braids…my goodness.
The fact that Sly Stallone allowed Ryan to age his character on camera and be fully vulnerable and committed to the performance…my goodness. This is a studio movie that was directed by a black man, written by two black men, 3 out of 4 top leads where black, the DP was a woman and the production designer was a black woman…my goodness. When they finally played “that” music cue…my goodness. Can’t say enough good things about this film and the more time that passes the more I think about it. Support it during its first week if you can. Ryan, Michael and Tessa are outta here! #CREED #CREEDMOVIE
