New Fashion Alert: What Is This You Say? Black Models Dominate European Brand Balmain

| July 7, 2014 | 0 Comments

Season after season, the number one topic of discussion in the fashion industry is the lack of diversity we see on and off the runway. Although this is a common complaint very few designers and brands have their lineup. Last season 78% of models were Caucasian and that only decreased by 1% from the spring 2014 season and that is why when we see ad campaigns from Givenchy and Balmain it makes you even more excited about fashion.

Recently Givenchy’s creative director Riccardo Tisci handpicked neo-soul singer Erykah Badu to be the face of the brand’s spring/summer 2014 ad campaign because of lack of diversity.

Tisci told that he grew up and was educated in a culture where folks were “considered all the same.”

Shot by photographer Mario Sorrenti, the Balmain ad features six models (Jourdan Dunn, Ysaunny Brito, Binx Walton,Issa Lish,  and Kayla Scott)  and only Cara Delevingne is the only who is not a woman of color. All models are shown lounging around wearing animal print and leather.

According to WWD, Rousteing wanted to make a statement with this campaign: “Insistent about speaking to his generation, the designer, 28, said showing ‘the beauty of different ethnicities’ reflects the reality of modern cities like Paris and his own boundary-breaking situation: being ‘a black boy in a really important French house.'”
