The Rainbow PUSH Coalition founded by Reverend Jesse L Jackson, Sr, has released a statement concerning the Emanuel AME Church shooting that left nine people dead in Charleston, SC.

In a statement coming from the Atlanta office of the RPC, the group spoke on the horrific act of violence that occurred Wednesday night in Charleston.

“Our first thoughts are with the Rev. Pinckney, the families of those who lives were lost to senseless gun violence and the entire of Emanuel AME. Violence against unarmed Christian senior citizens at prayer is cowardly and evil. We all must examine ourselves as a society to ask how a man so young can be filled with so much hate,” said the Coalition.

The letter also discussed how South Carolina lawmakers recently approved House Bill 3025. The bill proposed to do away with criminal background checks and gun safety classes as a requirement to obtain a license to carry a concealed weapon.

RPCEarlier today, United States President, Barack Obama, also spoke on the church shooting and gun violence in America.

“We don’t have all the facts, but we do know that, once again, innocent people were killed in part because someone who wanted to inflict harm had no trouble getting their hands on a gun,” said President Obama. “Now is the time for mourning and healing, but let’s be clear: At some point, we as a country, will have to reckon with the fact that this type of mass violence does not happen in other advanced countries. It doesn’t happen in other places with this kind of frequency.”
