Sports: Colin Kaepernick And 49ers Agree On Contract Extension

49ers star quarterback Colin Kaepernick and the San Francisco 49ers have reached an agreement on a six-year contract extension worth more than $110 million plus $61 million guaranteed.

The extension locks Kaepernick in until 2020 and puts him on the list of top 10 highest paid quarterbacks.

49ers general manager Trent Baalke has released a statement pertaining to Kap’s signing that reads, “Colin’s hard work and dedication have played an integral role in the recent success of the 49ers organization.”

Baalke’s statement on Kap attests to his leadership and duality that has benefited the franchise significantly over the last two seasons. Due to the mobility and strong arm of Kaepernick, the 49ers were able to have two consecutive successful seasons which culminated in a NFC West Division title in 2012 and a 2nd place divisional finish in 2013.

Kaepernick assumed the role of starting quarterback during the 2012 season in place of former 49ers quarterback Alex Smith. Kap led the 49ers to Super Bowl XLVII against the Baltimore Ravens where the Niners lost to the Ravens 34-31.

The following season Kap led the 49ers back to the NFC Championship Game where they lost against their division rivals Seattle Seahawks.

Nonetheless, Kap’s signing on Wednesday should have a strong impact on potential contract extensions for players who are eligible for those deals next year. Those players include Robert Griffin III, Andrew Luck, and Russell Wilson.

Cam Newton, Alex Smith, and Andy Dalton are among those who are eligible for a contract extension this year.
