When the verdict was returned last Saturday night in Seminole County Circuit court in Sanford, Florida, both Trayvon Martin’s parents were not present and it had members of the media wondering what exactly did that mean since they had been present throughout the entire court proceeding. With the exception of a tweet by both moments after the not guilty verdict was returned, neither had actually spoke out until yesterday.

Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, along with attorney Benjamin Crump, sat down with three major networks to speak out about George Zimmerman’s acquittal. Along with expressing their outrage, Martin’s parents also expressed their anguish at losing their son.

“I want America to know that Trayvon was a fun-loving child,” Tracy Martin told CBS’s Charlie Rose. “He was our child. We miss him dearly.” Tracy Martin expressed disbelief that the jury didn’t find Zimmerman guilty of anything.

“I thought surely that he would be found guilty of second degree murder — manslaughter at the least,” Fulton continued. “I just knew that they would see that this was a teenager just trying to get home.

This was no burglar. This was somebody — somebody’s son that was trying to get home.”

When Sybrina Fulton was asked what she’d like the government to do, she said “at least investigate” what happened the night her son was k!lled.

“I really didn’t believe that he was not guilty,” Fulton told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos.

“As parents, the understanding how they reached the verdict — I’ll never grasp that concept,” Martin added. “We didn’t think it was fair.”

Martin family attorney Benjamin Crump told Stephanopoulos that the family is calling on the Justice Department to pursue civil rights charges against Zimmerman.

Speaking to Matt Lauer, Tracy Martin said, “I think that if Trayvon had been white, this wouldn’t have never happened.”

Mr. Martin told Anderson Cooper on AC360 last night “I believed that the jury had made up their mind even before the trial had started.” Sabrina Fulton also suggested that there was clearly a disconnect between the jurors and her son.
