Tuition Debt Solution?
College students are solving their debt issues in a new way, well actually it isn’t a “new” way, and they’re just choosing to be open about it.
More and more students are using a site called SeekingArrangement.com, where they are paired with older men who are willing to pay for these students’ “time”.
“Taylor”, who is a recent member of this site, says she was faced with about $15,000 in unpaid tuition and overdue bills when she discovered the site. She created what is called a “sugar baby” profile and indicated what she was looking for in a “sugar daddy”. She also included photos of herself in revealing outfits and her preferred hobbies. She said she was looking for $1,000- $3,000 dollars a month.
According to the website owners, because the unemployment rates are so high all around the country, the number of “sugar baby” profiles has increased within the past few years. The failing economy has taken a toll on college students and recent graduates; they are starting their adult lives with a substantial amount of debt.
Brandon Wade, the Founder of Seeking Arrangements, estimates about 35% of the members are students. He identifies them by the .edu email addresses and by the number of members who list their occupation as student. Wade gives a free upgrade to those who register with an .edu email address, allowing them to have VIP membership. This membership includes unlimited messaging and access to VIP sugar daddies. The sugar daddies pay a $50 membership fee.
Wade believes he is providing a helpful service to students who are facing major debt by helping them to be able to afford college. As for the older men, he believes they have a chance to meet people half their age without the stigma of being seen as a pervert.
But the question of prostitution arises in this situation when, after her first encounter Taylor says, “I never thought it would come to this. I got on the train and I felt dirty, I mean I had just gotten money for having sex.” She went on to say, “I guess I accomplished what I needed to. I needed the money for school. I did what needed to be done.” Most members don’t see what they’re doing as prostitution because they are going into these situations knowing that sex is part of the deal. In a nutshell, this site promotes those who are seeking companionship while offering financial assistance in return.
What do you think? Is this prostitution or a mutually beneficial business arrangement?
