Each year, that electrifying light shining on our African American actors and actresses seem to dim, fading out of existence. The lack of our nominees in major categories for our black community is astonishing, yet not uncommon. Two-time Academy Award nominee Whoopi Goldberg spoke at the “Meet The Oscars” event in New York at the Grand Central Station—on Wednesday, February 23, 2011—in regards to this immensely revolving issue.

Whoopi Goldberg stated that the lack of black nominees in major categories of this year’s Academy Awards has no reflection on the trend within the film industry. Also stating, that only five black actors—Denzel Washington (2001), Halle Barry (2001), Jamie Foxx (2004), and Forest Whitaker (2006)—have won the Academy Awards since 2002.
