Star of the upcoming film “Colombiana”, Zoe Saldana is being criticized for playing a Columbian woman. Some Colombians are sharing their resentment because Saldana is Dominican and Puerto Rican. They feel a Dominican woman should not being playing the role of a Colombian.

Naysayers are also upset because they feel the film portrays Colombians in such a violent light. Saldana says, “Just because I’m Dominican doesn’t mean I can only play Dominican roles.” Saldana has played roles of an African-American woman as well as a blue alien. She notes that women of all races inspire her.

Saldana tells NY Daily News that this tough girl role was something she was really looking forward to, as well as all the guns. “I grew up around a family of hunters in the Caribbean and guns were always around. Now obviously I didn’t know about the weapons used in this movie, but that allowed me to create my own sort of swagger.” She’s not letting criticism stop her from reaching her goals as an actress. Colombiana opens in theaters August 26th, check out the trailer below.
