Over 12,000 welfare recipients (along with their children) in the state of Michigan will lose their welfare benefits, effective October 1.
The Republican-controlled House approved the bill that would put a 48 month cap on those who are receiving welfare benefits. Families with disabled children or spouse will continue to receive benefits.
Democrats argued that the 48-month cutoff should be gradual over time so families would not be put in jeopardy instead of losing their benefits immediately.
Gov. Rick Snyder supports the bill which he projects will save the state nearly $77 million. Recipients could no longer apply to the Department of Human Services for an extension beyond the 48 months.
Republicans rejected a Democratic appeal that would have provided extensions for recipients.
