Actor Leo O’ Brien, who played alongside Actor Taimak Guariello was severely wounded when a friend shot him three times during a crime wave that hit New York City last week. According to police reports, the shooting occurred on 7th Avenue and 127th Street.
O’Brien’s character in the classic movie was Richie Green and he played the buddie to martial arts actor Taimak who also resides in New York City.
“I’m feeling better than I was a a couple of days ago,” O’Brien, 40, told the Daily News Wednesday from his bed at Harlem Hospital.
“I was in intensive care but just for one day. I’m a fast healer — kind of a mutant…I’ve been told if this had happened to someone else, they’d be dead.”
The shooting happened on Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd. and W. 127th St. Police arrested Travis Breckenridge, 50, and charged him with attempted murder and gun possession.
O’Brien said he was standing on the corner when Breckenridge walked up to him. He suddenly felt a stinging sensation in his abdomen.
“You got a BB gun?” he asked his pal.
“The second bullet hit me in the stomach,” he said. “I knew then it was a real gun. I tried taking the gun from him…The third bullet hit me in the arm.
“He didn’t say anything to me. He started crying and ran away. He was my homeboy. Did we have a problem before he shot me? No. I don’t know why he shot me.
“He was scared. Maybe he thought I would hurt him?”
The former actor said he runs a small music studio, owns a convenience store in Harlem, and operates a company that sells magazines door to door.
He hasn’t dabbled in acting much since “The Last Dragon”, but said he’s working on producing and directing a movie. With friends like that…who needs any enemies?
