Last Wednesday, Reverend Al Sharpton’s National Action Network hosted its 2nd Annual Triumph Awards, where film maker Tyler Perry was honored. Perry, whose movies consistently make millions at the box office, has often been ridiculed by not only the film world for his comedic, surface plots but also by many in the African-American community due to his portrayal of blacks in a one dimensional light. Sharpton lashed out at the haters by calling them “proper negroes”. “The ultimate pride is where you don’t have to bend and adjust for others to accept you.” said Sharpton.
Here’s what Perry had to say about the backlash against his movies when thanking Sharpton and accepting his award:
“When you start out and you’re doing things and you’re trying to do the right things, and you find these attacks happening, and you try and figure out, ‘How do you handle this? How do you deal with this? How do you go there?’ So to have someone like you who has done all that you have done. To stand here and to give me this award, this is really, really awesome.”
What do you think of Sharpton’s comment. Tacky or truth??
