About two months ago, J. Cole released a new track to the delight of all of his fans. The track, “Grew Up Fast” is smooth and has throwback feel thanks to the sample from David Ruffin’s 1969 record, “The Double Cross.” In the song Cole raps “…unless you talkin blockbusters, you n—-s is not Russell. You more Diggy, me I’m more Biggie…” This line did not seem to sit well with the young emcee and prompted him to released “What You Say to Me.” Although in “Grew Up Fast” Cole promptly states “No disrespect to the young boy, I just rap and get bored quickly. Just to make up for that line, invite him on tour with me…” Diggy and the Simmons family will surely not be going on tour with J. Cole any time soon.

This is not the first time that J. Cole has taken a shot at the Simmons family though. On a recent radio interview with 99.1 KCCI in California Diggy claims to have wrote his diss a year ago and that it is just him protecting his family. Diggy stated that his sister (Vanessa Simmons) told him that J. Cole was spreading rumors on a “private relationship” that the two shared while they both attended St. Johns University. Although Simmons states that a relationship never existed between herself and J. Cole that hasn’t stopped Cole from rapping about it, specifically in his song “Purple Rain.” In “Purple Rain” Cole raps:
“Good girl huh, father was a preacher, sent her off to college thought I got her on a leash though. From the outside though, them girls be the squeakiest, you get ’em inside them girls be the freakiest, mischievous, downright devious, say she want cake I got all the right ingredients, running round fronting like a pure white virgin, gave a n—a dome while her father gave a sermon, Amen, let the choir sing. She be walking round campus like the quiet thing, so n—-s scared to approach when they admiring, man if they know like I know she got that fire thing, pour a little OJ with some P-Tron, I’m feeling ok, but homie she’s gone, when remmy Rev called she just ignore him, I had her calling on God till the weed, and then I hit the door n—a.”
Because of the lines in “Purple Rain” and “Grew Up Fast” Diggy took his own shots back at J. Cole in “What You Say.”
“The other day I was listening to ‘Purple Rain’ couldn’t believe all the things I heard em say.”
Diggy then continues to go in on J. Cole with a play on Cole’s song “Who dat” and rips:
“Who dat, who dat, you know who it is, heard you lyin on my sis tellin people that you hit. When your album drops I’ma hit you with your bricks, So I’ma bomb first on you since you wanna riff… little n—a named Cole think he live like me, jet setter, trendsetter, yeah you not like me.”
Diggy has been supported by his father and Vanessa since the release of the track with both of them taking to Twitter to defend the Diggy and the track. As of the time of this writing there has been no response from J. Cole.
