“Despite its festive title, Salim Akil’s “Sparkle” comes to theaters shaded by sadness. We all know that this represents the last performance from Whitney Houston, who died three months after filming her role.” NY Daily News
Houston plays Emma, the single-mother of the sensational singing-trio consisting of “American Idol” winner Jordan Sparks who plays the lead sister Sparkle, Tika Sumpter who plays Dee and Carmen Ejogo who plays Sister. The cast also includes Mike Epps, Derek Luke and CeeLo Green.
Movie reviews have stated much of the emotional connection from the film is inspired by Houston’s character. Chicago Tribune’s movie review shared “The character of the mother is meant to be a heartbroken vocalist wannabe, who chased her dreams of glory when she was younger but ran into bad luck and worse men. At one point in “Sparkle” one of her daughters confronts her about finding her some nights “laid up in your own vomit.” The line stings, and though Houston’s character refutes it, clearly it’s a link to Houston’s own tabloid fodder image.”
The film hits theatres tomorrow, August 17th! Check out the official trailer and other selected clips at Sparkle-Movie.com:
