During an interview with NY Magazine, Kobe Bryant’s wife Vanessa Bryant said, “I certainly would not want to be married to somebody that can’t win championships.” The wife of the famous NBA player faced heavy criticism regarding her statement. Does her marriage mean winning titles?
Sure, Kobe Bryant would be the perfect man to fit her qualifications — winning All-Star MVP awards in 2002, 2007, 2009 and 2011. 5-time NBA champion of 2000, 2001, 2002, 2009 and 2010 AND 16-time player of the month! Though her husband is, to say the least, very accomplished, Mrs. Bryant defended her comments in a statement released today:
I’m sad to hear that comments in my New York Magazine interview are being misconstrued and taken out of context. I have and will continue to support my husband’s dreams … I have been with Kobe for 13 years. I accepted his marriage proposal PRIOR to him winning any of his 5 championships with his teammates.
For anyone to think otherwise is wrong. It is not about being married to a ‘winner’ it is about our sacrifice as a family.
In fact, her comments during the interview in its entirety were, “I certainly would not want to be married to somebody that can’t win championships. If you’re sacrificing time away from my family and myself for the benefit of winning championships, then winning a championship should happen every single year.” Check out the entire interview!
According to USA Today, there is some validity to that fact that the couple got engaged in May 2000 — ironically a month before Bryant won his first title. She may also have a point about families and sacrifices of professional athletes. Vanessa filed for divorce in December citing irreconcilable differences and terms for a settlement of his estimate $150 million estate however, by this past Valentine’s Day the two had reconciled. Was it the wedding ring or the championship ring?
