The Daily News reporter Shane Kavanaugh Dixon reports that there was a partial building collapse at 8th Ave. and 14th St. No injuries were reported in the four story building, which has 25 units. Some 106 firefighters were at the scene. Mayor Michael Bloomberg held a press conference moments ago to access the damages that have already occurred due to the hurricane.
Millions are out of power and the death rate is sure to be high. “There will undoubtedly be some deaths that are caused by the intensity of this storm, by the floods, by the tidal surge, by the waves. The more responsibly citizens act, the fewer people will die,” Maryland Governor Martin O’ ‘Malley told reporters.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said the Category 1 storm had strengthened as it turned toward the coast and was moving at 18 miles per hour (30 km per hour). It was expected to bring a “life-threatening storm surge,” coastal hurricane winds and heavy snow in the Appalachian Mountains, the NHC said.
Scraping campaigning plans, President Obama issued a warning to all citizens who were in the path of the storm, urging residents who are in the way of the storm to follow evacuation orders. “When they tell you to evacuate, you need to evacuate. Do not delay. Don’t pause,” he said. “Don’t question the instructions that are being given, because this is a serious storm and it could potentially have fatal consequences,” said President Obama during his press conference.
Even after the storm has passed and weakened, Northeastern cities can still expect strong winds straight through the weekend.
