Suspended New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton will be a free agent when he returns from his punishment, according to an ESPN report.
The coach signed an extension in 2011, before any punishment was levied for the Bounty gate scandal, but the NFL has voided that deal sometime in the past year, said the report.
The problem with the extension has nothing to do with the NFL’s investigation into the Saints bounty program, but reportedly has to do with language in the deal that would allow Payton to walk away from the team if general manager Mickey Loomis were suspended, fired or left the team for any reason.
Payton has been working for team owner Tom Benson’s NBA franchise, the New Orleans Hornets, in the interim.
