A year ago today, hip-hop lost another legend. Dwight “Heavy D” Meyers last his life last November after he collapsed outside his Beverly Hills home. An autopsy report, released on December 27, 2011, found that the cause of death was a pulmonary embolism (PE).The coroner’s office found that Myers died of a PE that had broken off from a deep vein thrombosis in the leg. He also suffered from heart disease.
Heavy D was one of the early pioneers of the hip-hop/R&B hybrid that has come to dominate contemporary pop music. Heavy D & The Boyz were the first group signed to Uptown Records which would later include Mary J. Blige and Soul for Real. Later, Heavy would try his hand at film. He found himself roles on the big screen and the small screen over his time on earth.
Millions of records sold and plenty of hit singles, but I’ll always remember Heavy for the song “We Got Our Own Thing.” I live by that song to this day. RIP Heavy D, we still moving our feet to your music now.
