The old saying that “Black don’t crack” has never been truer. Mamie Rearden of South Carolina passed away this past Wednesday (January 2) at 114 years old. Rearden died in an Augusta hospital on Wednesday, just 20 miles away from her South Carolina home. Rearden was born in Edgefield, South Carolina in 1898 and had 11 children and a 59 year long marriage with her husband who died in 1979.
Rearden had just become the oldest living person in America 16 days before her death after the passing of 115-year old Dina Manfrideni died in Iowa. Sara Rearden, the daughter of Mamie Rearden described her mother as “the type who would say, ‘Do unto others as you want them to do by you,’ and later she changed that, which is interesting, to ‘do unto others as they ought to do by you”.
