Min. Farrakhan Speaks on Gun Violence in Chicago

Not many people will argue that the atrocity that occurred in the Sandy Hook school in Connecticut was by far one of the worst mass murders in our history but the senseless killing of children at the hands of children around America is a serious problem.

Nation of Islam leader Minister Louis Farrakhan knows all so well how this problem can destroy communities. In a recent video the outspoken leader expressed his concern about how the violence is not properly being addressed by the President. It would make perfect sense for Mr. Obama to be somewhat concerned about what has been a problem in the city that he will ultimately return to once he is out of office in 2016.

A prudent discussion should no doubt be focused on the issue of gun violence and the access of weapons by people who should’ve never had them in the first place. Why should it have taken a mass murder of children to bring attention to the issue in the first place?

    What is President Obama Proposing?

President Obama is asking Congress to implement mandatory background checks for all gun purchases, including private sales; reinstate a ban on some assault-style weapons; ban high-capacity magazines holding more than 10 rounds; and crackdown on illicit weapons trafficking.

The president’s proposal also includes new initiatives for school safety, including a call for more federal aid to states for hiring so-called school resource officers (police), counselors and psychologists, and improved access to mental health care.

President Obama also initiated 23 executive actions on gun violence, policy directives not needing congressional approval. Among them is a directive to federal agencies to beef up the national criminal background-check system and a memorandum lifting a freeze on gun violence research at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“I intend to use whatever weight this office holds to make them a reality,” Obama said at a midday event in a White House auditorium. “If there’s even one thing that we can do to reduce this violence, if there’s even one life that can be saved, then we have an obligation to try.

While these are some very good plans proposed, there are some on the right like the National Rifle Association that will fight tooth and nail not to see these plans come to light. Mississippi republican governor Phil Bryant even stated that he would make it a crime if anyone tried to enforce the Obama Gun Plan.

Min. Farrakhan’s argument is understood however the President alone will not be able to make changes to the gun issue as evidence by the opposition he is already receiving.
