Curren$y & Big K.R.I.T. Headline BMI Unsigned Urban Showcase [Photos]
Atlanta’s music enthusiasts were treated to BMI’s 15th Annual Unsigned Urban Showcase, held April 11 at Terminal West.
The showcase, hosted by G.O.O.D. Music ingénue Teyana Taylor and BMI’s Byron Wright, was sponsored by on-demand driving service Uber and radio station V-103 and featured performances by a selection of promising unsigned talent and marquee recording artists.
With music provided by DJ Sense, the showcase kicked off with rousing vocal performances by Unsigned Urban Showcase competition finalists Jade Novah, Spree Wilson, Skipper Jones and Dezzy Yates the Phreshbot.
Winning the top prize was Skipper Jones, who wowed the audience and judges with his stage presence and overall charisma.
The panel of judges included songwriter/producer Stevie J; social media savant Karen Civil; Atlantic Records Senior Vice President, A&R Dallas Martin; Gordon & Rees LLP attorney & Partner Donald Woodard; DTP Records Senior A&R Paris Kirk; and Motown Records Vice President, A&R Ezekiel Lewis.
Along with the unsigned talent, the highly anticipated night of music featured a performance by Warner Bros. Records’ Curren$y and a surprise appearance by Cinematic/Def Jam Records’ recording artist Big K.R.I.T.
In addition, BMI’s Vice President, Writer/Publisher Relations Catherine Brewton presented the Legends of ATL Award to DJ Greg Street. The prestigious honor recognizes a community leader for his or her contribution to the Atlanta music scene.
