Lauryn Hill was just sentenced to three months in prison for tax evasion
Singer Lauryn Hill has to go to jail for three months even though she coughed up a sizable Hill paid $970,000 to satisfy state and federal back taxes, that was not enough to stop U.S. Magistrate Madeline Cox Arleo for passing down a prison sentence to the multi-grammy winner. Last year the former Fugees member plead guilty to three counts of failing to file tax returns. While some might think her sentence was fair considering actor Wesley Snipes didn’t fair as well, Hill believed her treatment by the government was like being in slavery.
The singer was present for her sentencing hearing and made the following statement:
“I was put into a system I didn’t know the nature of. … I’m a child of former slaves. I got into an economic paradigm and had that imposed on me,” Hill said. She continued, “I sold 50 million units … now I’m up here paying a tax debt. If that’s not likened to slavery, I don’t know what is.”
Once the singer completes her 90 day sentence she will be required to be on home confinement for an extra 90 days and be on probation for 1 year. She must surrender to the Bureau of Prisons on July 8th to begin her sentence. Hopefully she will use this time to write more music and brush up on the tax codes.
