It has only been a few weeks since the Jay Z announced that he was starting his Roc Nation Sports Division and already his first pick to join his roster has hit a snag in the road.
The NFL league is investigating whether Jay Z violated the league’s policy as it related to the recruitment of New York Jets draft pick Geno Smith.
An instagram photo of Jigga and Smith hit the internet which prompted the league’s investigation into the matter since the photo was taken before he was signed to Roc Nation Sports according to sources.
Another issue that may cause a problem with the signing is that the rules mandate that only NFLPA-certified agents may be involved in the recruitment of clients.
The NFL Players Association intends to send a letter of inquiry to Roc Nation Sports agent Kim Miale. They want to know what exactly Jay-Z’s role was in the Smith deal. It didn’t help that Smith’s associate and former NFL defensive tackle John Thornton was quoted in a CBS story saying, “I was in those meetings, and Jay-Z connected with him on many levels.” Thornton later said he never said those things.
Worse case scenario for the rap superstar is that his signing might be blocked by the league or Geno Smith will not be able to play in the NFL which some believe is unlikely to happen.
This story is still developing so check back for updates.
