Labor Day weekend in Brooklyn, New York is a time of ‘feting’ for Caribbean natives, who migrated to the United States, and this weekend was no different. The first highlighted event to start the weekend was Brass Festival on Friday, August 30th, at the Brooklyn Museum.
The show, which started at 8:00 pm, featured the Soca Monarch, Groovy Monarch winner, and yearly staple act, Machel Montano HD from Trinidad and Tobago, alongside other acts from Trinidad and other Caribbean islands. The show admission cost, which was five dollars more than last year, was $50 pre-sold and followed with the inconspicuous ‘more at the door.’
The event was hosted by MC Wassy & Gisele The Wassi One, another yearly staple, did the expected continuous chatter between acts, which treaded along the line of being boring at times. The performers who trampled the stage with high energy, however, kept the crowd, in high spirits. Patrice Roberts, Farmer Nappy, and Lyrikal delivered as expected. Newcomer Pumpa performed his hit song “Massage,” which some thoroughly enjoyed.

Other acts included Willie Villegas Salsa Band, St. Lucia’s Teddyson John, Boodoo Singh Tassa Drummers and TJ Project.
