Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening Auction was last week and an anonymous buyer snatched up Jean-Michel Basquiat’s painting entitled Mecca. Now there are claims that Jay Z was the buyer who dropped $4.5 million for the painting. The painting features the Empire State Building with Basquiat’s signature crown. Basquiat has become one of the major art icons in the hip-hop industry. Jay has shown his admiration for the artist by mentioning him in his lyrics. The rapper also owns one of Basquiat’s paintings. On Wednesday, Jay signed rapper Jeezy to Roc Nation and posted a picture in front of his Basquiat painting with the caption “It’s Official Now”. Only Jay Z can be perfectly fine after spending $4.5 million on a painting, but we ain’t mad at you Jigga.
