99 problems and the “Brooklyn Nets” name might be one of them for rapper and music mogul Jay Z, because a sharp thinking Professor in New York decided to trademark the name that is widely being used by the NBA franchise which the rapper owns an interest in.
In a 168-page pro se federal lawsuit exclusively obtained by Hiphopenquirer.com which he has named not only Hova but the NBA and anyone connected with infringing on his trademark.
The Plaintiff, Dr. Francois de Cassagnol, filed a pro se complaint with the Eastern District of the State of New York on December 9, 2013, asking for a jury trial over the matter — and $600 million in damages, at least.
Dr. Cassagnol sent a letter to Jay Z and others in August of 2012 with a plethora of questions and asking for a settlement with this matter. In the documents obtained by HHE, Dr. Cassagnol claims he met Jay Z many years ago and introduced himself as “the full MBE owner of the Brooklyn Nets’ Brands and related Brooklyn Nets’ Marks.”
Cassagnol believes that he has a strong case that will hold up in court along with his alleged “proof of purchase.” He also states in the letter, “I’ve had full ownership of the Brooklyn Nets’ Brands for almost 10 years…all other related parties knew about my Brooklyn Nets; activities from the very beginning of the development of the Arena in Brooklyn.”
