The 78th Annual Academy Awards - Press Room


On March 5, 2006, Three 6 Mafia won the Oscar for Best Original Song for “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp” which was on the Hustle & Flow soundtrack. Hustle & Flow was an independent drama written and directed by Criag Brewer and produced by John Singleton and Stephanie Allain. The film starred Terrence Howard as the lead and Taraji P. Henson as supporting actress. Three 6 Mafia on this day became the first hip-hop group to win an Oscar for Best Original Song. It didn’t stop there, on the very same night Three 6 also became the first hip-hop artists to perform at the Academy Awards.
