Tupac Shakur, arguably the greatest rapper of all time, is the only person I know other than Elvis to be rumored to still be alive years after his death. His untimely death left a void in the rap game with a lot of fans who kept slim hope that his death was staged and that one day he would make his return.
Unfortunately for Tupac fans the legendary rapper is gone, but the great news for his fans is that his legacy has been resurrected and will finally make its way to the big screen. The John Singleton directed film expects to start production this summer. Singleton, a long time friend of Tupac, is also on board to co-write and coproduce the long awaited Tupac biopic.
To add to this already great news, Open Road Films has committed to a wide-screen release of at least 2000 theaters. The deal was set by Open Road CEO Tom Ortenberg, Morgan Creek chairman and CEO James G. Robinson, Program Pictures’ L.T. Hutton and Emmtt/Furla/Oasis Films principals Randall Emmett and George Furla. After so many delays and setbacks it is nice to see this film finally move forward.
The film is expected to capture Shakur’s life growing up in East Harlem, to reaching superstardom in hip-hop and acting, to his position in the East Coast/West Coast rap war that some would say eventually led to his death.
Now the question on everyone’s mind is who will play Tupac? Should it be an already established actor or should it be a brand new up and coming actor?
