Racism defined by Dictionary.com is a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement; usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
Thanks to the good folks over at TMZ we have proof that in 2014 racism sadly still lives and it lives in the home of Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling. Sterling recently went on a racist rant during an argument with his girlfriend V. Stiviano, who ironically is black and Mexican.
TMZ released audio of the heated conversation between Sterling and V. Stiviano. The Clippers owner was furious that she took a picture with Magic Johnson and shared it via her Instagram account. The comments made by Sterling sounded like a second-generation slave owner. Check out some of his quotes from the conversation below.
– “It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you’re associating with black people. Do you have to?” (3:30)
– “You can sleep with [black people]. You can bring them in, you can do whatever you want. The little I ask you is not to promote it on that … and not to bring them to my games.” (5:15)
– “I’m just saying, in your lousy f******* Instagrams, you don’t have to have yourself with, walking with black people.” (7:45)
– “…Don’t put him [Magic] on an Instagram for the world to have to see so they have to call me. And don’t bring him to my games.” (9:13)
What would Sterling do without any black ball players on his NBA team? I tell you what they wouldn’t do and that’s make the playoffs. “Playoffs?” in my Jim Mora voice.
Maybe the black players from the Clippers should walk off and boycott the team due to clear racial discrimination. Either way I feel sorry for them brothers to have to play for such a racist day in and day out. Especially right now in the playoffs. This is like the NBA version of 12 Years a Slave.
Magic Johnson, disgusted by Sterling’s comments, responded to his rant.
“It’s a shame that Donald Sterling feels that way about African-Americans.”
He adds, “He has a team full of amazing African-American basketball players that are working to bring a championship to Clippers fans. The Clippers also have a strong minority fan base.”
MMG artist Meek Mill also weighed in on the comments made by Sterling via Twitter.
This recent rant continues a long history of racist behavior for Sterling. He’s been sued twice by the federal government for allegedly refusing to rent apartments to Blacks and Latinos. He was also sued by former Clippers exec Elgin Baylor for racial discrimination. Baylor’s case was shot down due to an unconvinced jury.
