Aldon Smith addressed social media for the first time since his arrest back on April 13 at LAX.

Smith, the talented yet troubled linebacker for the 49ers, took to Twitter with an inspirational tweet that read, “Stay positive and always give your best effort, eventually you will overcome your immediate problems and find you are ready for greater tests.”

Smith’s tweet came days after NFL.com reported that the 49ers organization has exercised its fifth-year option on Smith’s contract. The option is worth close to $10 million for 2015 quelling any doubts or speculation that the Niners were interested in retaining Smith beyond the 2014 season.

Smith has struggled staying out of legal trouble as of late.  His most recent brush with the law came in April following an incident where Smith was arrested for making an alleged bomb threat to TSA officers at LAX airport. He has also had two DUI’s within the span of two years.

Despite his off the field issues, Smith remains one of the premiere defensive players in the NFL and a key part in San Francisco’s 3-4 defensive scheme with 42 total sacks thus far in his first three seasons. He also set the 49ers single season sack record with 19 1/2 sacks in 2012.

Let’s just hope from here on out Smith can rehabilitate himself and keep his nose clean for the sake of his fans, coaches, teammates and most importantly himself.
