Miami Dolphins second-year defensive back Don Jones has been fined an undisclosed amount of money and dismissed from team following a tweet he posted on his Twitter account. What was the tweet regarding? It was Jones’ response to Michael Sam being drafted on Saturday afternoon. Jones tweeted the words “OMG” and “Horrible” in response to the news of Sam being drafted.
Jones met with the Dolphins on Sunday to discuss his punishment for his Twitter comments. In addition to the fine he must undergo educational training before he can return to the team.
In his first public comments following the tweet Jones issued an apology to Sam by stating, “I want to apologize to Michael Sam for the inappropriate comments that I made last night on social media. I take full responsibility for them and I regret that these tweets took away from his draft moment.”
Sam became the first openly gay player drafted into the NFL. He was selected with the 249th pick in the seventh round by the St. Louis Rams. Sam won the SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year Award and Unanimous All-American last season.
