There are several players in the NBA who have strong objections to Donald Sterling being an owner of a NBA franchise. LeBron just so happens to be the most vocalized active players on this issue. As a matter of fact he took it a step further on Sunday when he said players believe no Sterling family member should have any ownership in a NBA franchise.
The NBA may have imposed a lifetime ban on Mr. Sterling but he is still the majority owner of the franchise. Commissioner Adam Silver has already urged owners to force Sterling to sell the team. The league has already taken the first step in that direction on Friday when it was announced that Richard Parsons was hired as interim CEO of the Clippers franchise.
However, Sterling’s estranged wife Shelly Sterling is not going out without a fight. Mrs. Sterling owns a 50 percent stake in the Clippers franchise and is not willing to give that up behind the actions of her estranged husband. In fact Mrs. Sterling plans on filing a divorce in order to make sure she retains her stake.
Don’t tell that to LeBron though. During an interview on Sunday James stated, “As players, we want what’s right and we don’t feel like no one in his family should be able to own the team.”
Donald Sterling is the longest-tenured owner in the NBA. It will be interesting to see how this litigation plays out. Whether it results in Shelly being able to retain 50 percent stake in the franchise or Donald having to sell the team under tremendous amounts of pressure.
We should find out soon enough.
