Issues dealing with copyright have to be the most frequent of all legal issues pertaining to the music industry. Once again we find an artist who is amidst legal troubles for allegedly stealing another’s music. New York rapper/singer Azealia Banks and Los Angeles-based DJ/producer Diplo have a lawsuit filed against them for their 2012 collaboration entitled, “F@ck Up The Fun”.
Music producer Master D claims that Banks and Diplo stole his original copyrighted sound recording “Mad Drumz” and used it to create a song without permission and without publicly acknowledging their use of “Mad Drumz”. To make matters worse, Diplo claimed that Master D took part in the creating of “F@ck Up The Fun”, which he did not.
This case of infringement came to light as people started to notice similarities between the Diplo/Banks collabo and Master D’s 2008 “Mad Drumz”. After many attempts to strike a deal between both parties, an agreement was never reached. Diplo continued to use the beat and Master D continued to take financial loses, that is until Master D decided to file a lawsuit against Banks and Diplo.
Hip Hop Enquirer obtained the complaint and found that not only are Banks and Diplo facing counts, but also Universal Music Group, DatPiff, Amazon.com, and many other distributors for having an interest in the infringing song and receiving a financial gain.
It’s not looking good at all for Azealia Banks and Diplo. At this point it is not about whether they are guilty or innocent, but instead it is about the penalty they face for their alleged civil wrong.
