Former Miami Heat and Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy has reached an agreement to take the helm as new head coach and President of Basketball Operations for the Detroit Pistons.

Pistons’ owner Tom Gores was looking for a household name as far as head coaches are concerned and has finally found him. However, the two parties have only agreed in principle as Van Gundy’s contract has yet to be finalized. The finalization of that contract could be at the end of the week.

Nonetheless, Van Gundy seems to be the right guy for this position especially given his track record. He has an overall record of 371-208 as a head coach which includes numerous playoff appearances and a Finals appearance back in 2009 against the Lakers.

The Golden State Warriors were reportedly interested in Van Gundy filling the head coaching vacancy but Detroit has an even more enticing proposition; that being in the position of making personnel decisions in addition to calling the shots on the sideline.

Gores is looking to fill the Pistons President of Basketball Operations vacancy after Joe Dumars stepped down from the position exactly a month ago. Dumars held that position for 14 years.

The Pistons franchise is currently in the revitalization phase and bringing a coach of Van Gundy’s caliber on board could certainly expedite the rebuilding phase of this team.
