Steve Kerr has agreed in principle to a five-year, $25 million offer to become the next coach of the Golden State Warriors. Kerr had rejected an offer from his former head coach and current Knicks president Phil Jackson to become head coach for them.
Jackson and Kerr have had a close relationship stemming back to Kerr’s playing days as a Chicago Bull under Jackson where he helped the Bulls to three championship rings during their second three peat. Kerr also won two additional rings as a role player for the San Antonio Spurs in 1999 and 2003 before ultimately retiring as one of the greatest three-point shooters in the history of the NBA.
Kerr’s hiring comes a week after the Warriors inexplicably fired Mark Jackson following a 51-win regular season and a first-round playoff elimination at the hands of the L.A. Clippers in Game 7.
Although this is Kerr’s first gig as a head coach in the NBA he has front office personnel experience. He has previously served as general manager for the Phoenix Suns. He held that position for three years before stepping down in 2010.
Kerr comes on board and plans on leading an explosive Warriors’ team with loads of talent. Most notably the long-range shooting 1-2 punch of Steph Curry and Klay Thompson, colloquially known as Splash City, has the opportunity to be coached by the NBA’s all-time leader in three-point percentage in Kerr.
