Earlier this week news broke that Yasiin Bey formerly known as Mos Def had to cancel a U.S. show due to his inability to re-enter the United States. Bey, who has been living in South Africa since 2013, has said that he fell in love with the “good vibe” of Cape Town, but has yet to speak on his current situation.  Abdi Hussein, a friend of Bey, who is also an American living in South Africa has come forward to say that all the gossip is not true.

Hussein, in a Times Live report, said that the U.S. ban was a “complete lie” and that Bey had “moved the dates” of his planned tour because he was working on other projects in Africa. Hussein went on to say, “[Mos Def] has never attempted to enter any country and been refused. It’s a complete lie. In fact, if there was anything criminal against you, they would invite you back so they could lock you up.”

At this point, who knows what Yassin Bey’s true situation is.  It seems like his life took a strange turn with the changing of his name.  All I know is that it is great that Bey is spending time in the “motherland,” but I think its time for the real Mos Def to please stand up.
