The shock value of the 2014 French Open continues to increase as both Venus and Serena Williams were eliminated in the second round.

The Williams’ sisters as well as tennis fans everywhere looked forward of the possibility of a matchup between the sisterly phenoms later this week. Unfortunately, the Venus and Serena square off will not come to fruition.

Both Venus and Serena were eliminated in the second round Wednesday by unsuspecting opponents.

Serena, the defending French Open champion and 17-time major winner, was upended by Garbine Muguruza from Spain in two sets (6-2, 6-2). Muguruza, currently the World Tennis Association’s 32nd ranked player in the Singles category, upset the No. 1 player in the nation in Serena.

Venus was eliminated a short time earlier by Slovakian tennis player Anna Schmiedlova in three sets (2-6, 6-3, 6-4).

Interestingly, had both Serena and Venus won they would have faced each other in the third round.

This is Muguruza’s second time competing in the French Open and fourth major she has competed in overall in her pro career. Her first French Open was last year when she and her doubles partner were eliminated in the first round.

The Williams sister upsets come a day after reigning 2014 Australian Open champion Li Na was eliminated in the first round by Kristina Mladenovic from France.

It is going to be interesting to see how the remainder of this year’s French Open plays out without tennis’ biggest stars.
