While the NBA still anticipates the long awaited decisions of Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James on where they will end up next, the Cavaliers decide they will lock up their own star player. The Cavs sign point guard Kyrie Irving to a five-year extension worth $90 million.
The two sides reached this agreement last week. However, the news of Irving inking this extension did not break until Thursday. Owner Dan Gilbert and the Cavs organization hope this proposition will be enticing enough in their pursuit of bringing LeBron back to the city of Cleveland.
Meanwhile, the city of Cleveland has something to cheer about for the time being. They are cheering that their franchise player has been locked in for an additional five years.
Irving was drafted number one overall in the 2011 NBA Draft. He would subsequently win the NBA Rookie of the Year honors following the 2011-2012 season. Irving had his best season statistically during the 2012-2013 season, his sophomore campaign, where he was voted to his first of two All-Star games. He averaged 22.5 points per game, 5.9 assists per game, and 1.5 steals per game that season despite missing three weeks due to an injured index finger.
With this extension Kyrie is expected to take the next step in establishing himself among the top point guards in the NBA. He already spreads the floor pretty well offensively like a true point guard and is a potent scorer as well as an excellent ball defender. The only thing left to add to Irving’s repertoire is improving on his catch-and-shoot technique.
