During a 2 hour in-depth interview at The Combat Jack Show, Roc nation rapper J. Cole spoke about a few interesting things like the inspiration behind his new album “2014 Forest Hills Drive,” protesting in Ferguson, and wanting to sign TDE rapper Kendrick Lamar. Cole says he first met Lamar back in 2010 before the both of them had released their debut albums. “I met Kendrick at a time when all I had out was “The Warm Up,” nobody knew who he was, he didn’t have a deal,” he said. “He was signed to Top Dawg—I didn’t know he was signed to Top.”

“In my mind, he was the first person I ever found that I was like, ‘Yo, I’m tellin’ everybody I wanna sign this kid cause this nigga’s nasty!’ What happened was I was at a party in L.A. with this group UNI…At the party, they did a few songs and they brought this short, dark-skinned kid up and I was like, ‘Yo, who is this kid?’ And he gets on the mic and he murders.” Said J.Cole.

Cole then approached Kendrick and K-Dot reminded him that they met before at the 2010 XXL Freshman with Jay Rock. “He was like, ‘I was asking [the editors] to give me your spot.’ But they didn’t know who he was.” Later that night, Cole received “P***y and Patron” and “Cut You Off” via email. “I was like, ‘Yo, I’m fuckin’ with this ni**a. I wanna sign this ni**a!’ From there, I felt compelled to always give him any jewels I could.” He even helped put Dr. Dre on to him. “When I was in the studio with Dre I had to tell Dre like, ‘Yo, you ain’t never heard of Kendrick?’ And he was like, ‘Oh, Kendrick? Yeah, I’m supposed to be meeting with him soon.’ And I was giving him the crazy co-sign like, ‘You gotta fuck with Kendrick.’”
