Tidal co-owner Jay-Z has been not wasted time building up Tidal as the go to music streaming source. Over the weekend Rihanna’s new song ‘American Oxygen’ and Beyonce’s ‘Die With You’ were all premiered on Tidal and as of Monday, the streaming service has more exclusive content. Reasonable Doubt, the 1996 classic debut from Sean Carter was removed from Spotify and is only on Tidal now.
The move which is not very surprising but more so interesting since Jay-Z owns his entire catalog and decided to only pull one of his albums off Spotify. Granted Reasonable Doubt is considered his best album but seems like a strategic chess move at this point. Hov joins Taylor Swift, another Tidal co-owner, to remove their music Spotify.
Tidal, which was bought for $56 million, is now reportedly worth $250 million and that is with only around 100,000 subscriptions. It will be interesting to see what further develops as if artists pulling their music becomes a trend, Spotify may be forced to change their business model.
