Jay-Z’s newest music streaming service, Tidal, hasn’t been living up to it’s hype ever since the rap mogul relaunched the company back in March.
Tidal offers high fidelity and loss-less audio quality at the cost of $20 per month. The ideology behind the music streaming service is that the fees will lead to more royalties for the artist. Tidal also claims that the service will be giving more back to fans as well.
Jay-Z relaunched Tidal with a call-to-arms style campaign that pulled together some of the biggest names in the music business. Jigga went on a “Twitter rant” on Sunday using the hashtag #Tidalfacts in an attempt to defend his newest company which he acquired in January.
Tidal’s app debuted in the iTunes store top 20 but last week it was reported that the app dropped out of the top 700 available iPhone apps. During yesterday’s twitter storm Jay-Z claimed that Tidal had over 770,000 subscribers.
“We are here for the long haul. Please give us a chance to grow and get better,” said the CEO of Roc Nation in a tweet.
Shawn Carter is accusing other big companies of spending millions of dollars on a smear campaign against Tidal. While that statement hasn’t been confirmed as true or false, it’s highly unlikely that Tidal’s lack of success is the fault of a competitor.
It remains to be seen what the overall impact of Tidal will be in the music streaming business but they definitely started off on the wrong foot by putting artist that are already millionaires (Alicia Keys, Kanye West, Rihanna, Madonna, and more) on a stage to say that they are not being paid enough.
