‘White Appreciation Day’…let it sink for a second and see if that sounds like a good idea. No? Well then you have already put in more thought than Colorado BBQ restaurant owners Edgar Antillon and Miguel Jimenez. Both are of Hispanic heritage, declared June 11th ‘White Appreciation Day’ where white people would receive a ten percent discount. No word yet if the altitude of Colorado and or the legalization of marijuana has played a role in this concept.
Edgar Antillon said, “We have a whole month for Black History Month, we have a whole month for Hispanic Heritage Month. So we figured all we could…the least we could do is offer one day to appreciate white Americans”. Obviously, the word equality is a difficult vocabulary word for Edgar and most others to understand. There are issues already that one cultures history can be condensed into a month time to be ignored the other 11 months. But what is ‘White Appreciation Day’? What is it about White Americans that needs to be appreciated specifically? Put 30 seconds on the clock

The logic behind the discount is beyond flawed,but the good intention was almost there. The owner stated, “We’re all American, whether you came from a different country, or you were born here.” Fair point but you can not make that statement and then favor the dominant group. I do not know if white Americans or the minorities that share this same sentiment understand that when a scholarship is given to a Hispanic teenager it is for a reason. A Miss Black Teen pageant exists not to exclude white people but because they have been excluded. The Fair Housing Act has a purpose, these laws and events are not trying to rub anything into the white, christian, male’s face.
Getting past the ideological and ethical reasons it is wrong, it also just is not legal. This discount is race related therefore it is discriminatory. If only you could sue for stupidity as well. What happens with a bi-racial family, will they be getting 5 percent off? Hell they might as well implement the brown paper bag test for them while they are at it.
Yes, there are going to be many that think this restaurant owner is a genius and calls for reverse racism and double standards. Lord forbid we do not have a white history month (every other month in the year) or a white entertainment television, it is called CBS. Because people of any color will gladly give that back to fix the systematic discrimination in America.
So Edgar Antillion and Miguel Jimenez can give white people their 10 percent discount at their BBQ restaurant; as long as Asians get a discount at Chipotle, black people at Benihanas, and Hispanics at Popeye’s.
We know that sounds ridiculous as this proposed stupid holiday!
