Produkt, the up and coming Latino rapper from the Bronx has dropped a new mixtape for the streets. Produkt caught our attention with his cinematic style video for “Back on the Run” and his comments on the XXL Freshman 2015 cover.
In-con-spic-u-ous is a 7 track mixtape for real fans of hip hop street music. Produkt isn’t going to overwhelm you with super witty wordplay or catchy beats like many commercial rappers. Instead he keeps it real and speaks from his heart on his records with a classic New York flow. He set the tone in the opening track “Spic” rapping about just trying to make it in gritty streets of New York, dealing with his own inner demons and avoiding the pitfalls surrounding him of people looking down on his people.
Produkt is great at evoking a wide range of human emotions in music like rage, anguish, joy, and humor. The second and third tracks, “All of Me” and “Ruthless” is Produkt at his best as he delivers real raps about his days drug dealing on the streets of the Bronx. He admits he “feel in love with a game that ain’t gonna love back” on All of Me. As Produkt raps listeners are able to feel that he is more than just a gun toting, dope dealing gangster. His raps are filled with complex thoughts and emotions almost as if he is in a confessional releasing all of his thoughts on his records.
He picks up the pace halfway through the album with “Rose Gold” featuring Frank Benz. He speeds up the flow, creating a hot track with a catchy hook that doesn’t sacrifice his lyricism. “Work” featuring Paperz. It not a club banger per say, but compared to the other tracks the song is more upbeat and an easy listen. He follows up with “Just for Minute” a smooth song that appeals to the ladies.
Overall, this production proves that Produkt is definitely an artist to watch. His gritty Scarface style storytelling is appealing and doesn’t overwhelm listeners but lacks depth. This is a great starting point for listeners looking to introduce themselves to Produkt’s music.
