Perhaps the tide is changing on how corrupt cops will be dealt with by the criminal justice system because former Police officer Ray Tensing will have to remain in jail unless he can cough up a million dollars because that is what a judge has decided is necessary to insure he will not flee from prosecution.
Tensing has been charged with Voluntary Manslaughter and Murder and is facing life in jail if convicted for the killing of Samuel DeBose, an unarmed black man on July 19 of this year.
Just a day earlier, Hamilton County prosecutor Joe Deters announced he would prosecute Tensing to the fullest extent of the law.
“I’ve been doing this for over 30 years. This is the most asinine act I’ve ever seen a police officer make — totally unwarranted,” said Deters. “It’s an absolute tragedy in the year 2015 that anyone would behave in this manner. It was senseless.”
There were many who thought that this case would end up similar to the outcome of the senseless killing of unarmed Ferguson, Missouri teen Mike Brown when Prosecutor McCullough decided not to prosecute Ferguson cop Darrin Wilson even though the evidence showed Mike Brown was not the aggressor.
A reporter asked Deters whether he thought Tensing tried to mislead investigators looking into the incident.
“Yes,” he said. “I think he was making an excuse for a purposeful killing” of DuBose, who was unarmed.
Tensing is heard telling other officers that DeBose was dragging him however his body camera shows a different account of what actually happened.
In the video, you can clearly see Tensing firing his weapon into the car and then that’s when DeBose vehicle speed off likely due to him being shot because the car crashed within seconds after he was shot.
Let’s hope there will be a conviction in this case and hoping all cops will think before firing their weapon when there is no threat to anyone. The body camera actually worked in this situation.
